bad dream

12 May

when i was a kid
i used to have bad dreams. i was in a really dark lift. the lift was not moving at all no matter what buttons i pressed. And i couldn’t open the door of it. somehow, the lift got out of control. i fell as the lift fell from a really high place to the ground. i woke up usually right before the lift got crushed when it hit the ground.

i dunno why i have such bad dreams quite often when i was young. but i learn that people were abused when they were tiny little boys/ girls have bad dreams. that’s understandable.

luka
i talk about bad dreams because i’m addicted to a song called ‘luka’. it is sang by suzanne vega in the 80s and it’s about child abuse. what i’m shocked about is the contrast between the happy music and the miserable underlying meaning of the song. some critics said that this song is about victims tried hard to cover or deny their unhappy childhood experience by profound music. i feel really sorry about the experience and the denial.

old vs new
actually i’m addicted to the same song but not suzanne’s version. it’s because her version is pretty devastating. the MV is quite scary too (that’s why i’m sharing suzanne vega’s version here, hahaha). i’m addicted to the version sang by olivia ong who is a singaporean-japanese singer. her voice is fresher and natural. i know it sounds like the happy voice of olivia ong even creates a larger contrast with the sorrowful meaning of the song.

all about happiness
but what i decode the song when i first heard is all about happiness. i can’t feel the sorrow. i can feel that one has move on with their experience. by gone is by gone. for me, olivia’s version makes me feel better. i even want to hum as  i walk home when i’m listening to this song. i don’t know if you guys would like this song but it’s worth a try.

ohhh… and don’t be frightened by bad dream. you don’t know how amazing good dream is without bad dream, right? if you do bad dreams, listen to the music you like, freshen your mind with what you like. take your mind to picnic with fresh air, green grass and yummy fruits and cakes. and you’ll be fine.

so there you go, olivia ong’s luka

Cheers
