we do need c.c.

C.C. is not CoCo Chanel but
Creative Commons

there are a number of reasons that i think C.C. is important to property sharing and protection.

firstly, C.C could ensure different forms of intellectual property are able to share in the public domain with protection. it is because anyone quotes, remixes, reproduces or uses the original property in any manners, has to acknowledge the source as well as the author. not being acknowledged is the last thing any author/ producer wants to see. in short, C.C. makes everyone happy. people are happy with the access to the property while the author/producer are happy with the acknowledgment. it is definitely a win-win case.

however,
some may say that why do we need c.c when copyright is there to protect the author/producer and property. copy right is even more effective in preventing illegal/unwanted stealing of property. however, it also prevents the access and sharing of property. and this leads to negative impact of the whole democratic sharing culture.

c.c. is able to give the ‘freedom of sharing and enjoying’ which copyright could not provide. copyright is in a sense too restrictive in terms of property sharing. c.c. allows anyone to get access or even share the property, given that it’s under the limitations set by the author/producer.

sharing intellectual property promotes creativity. and creativity is the driving force for more properties, both in diversity and quality. we can think from the other side. if there is little or no sharing, limited amount of further remixes from the original property could be created. that means there will be less fantastic and innovative music or picture like those created by andy warhol ( you know, some of his artefacts were based on remixing and repeating original properties, eg the campbell soup cans and marilyn monroe prints). his prints revealed the importance of property sharing and property remixing as well as impacts on modern arts culture. and i’m sure that all of us want to see more innovative publications by allowing some degree of property sharing.

as a m&c student
writing on behalf of media and communications students, c.c. has to be there in terms of sharing opinion and photos. we definitely want to make our voice to be heard. the easiest and quickest way to make our opinion heard is through sharing on internet then wide-spread via sharing. c.c. certainly gives us the faith that we would be acknowledged when our voices are copied/shared/mentioned in anywhere. this serves a channel for media students to be heard from media organization.  this is a chance for us to begin our media career. most importantly, we, media students, are doing what we are supposed to do; being the public watchdog for the sake of the commonwealth.

indeed, not just journalistic students but all people love sharing like, painters, music-lovers, carpenters, fashion designers etc, would find c.c. helpful in terms of protecting them when sharing their works.

therefore, i do place a c.c. in this blog. this ensures my voice could be heard, shared or even circulated among people (if my words are good enough). at least, this gives me a channel to share under my preferred boundaries.

i do understand why some people still have doubt on c.c. it’s true that c.c. is still in a developing age. and some people don’t really have faith on it. they may believe copy right is ‘protective enough’ for them and their property. yea, they are way too ‘protective’.

words to those have doubt on c.c.:
try it. it just takes you a minute to make your own c.c. for your property. then it can protects your property. it neither does any harm to you nor your property. and it doesn’t infringe your copy right to your property. besides, you can let more people know your fabulous work and be part of the innovative people to promote a healthy democratic sharing culture. why not?
